Signboard & Advertising Licence Assistance
Licencore Advisory, with its office in Cheras, Selangor, provides signboard and advertising licence application support to businesses across Malaysia. In Malaysia, shop signboards and outdoor advertisements are generally regulated by the local council (PBT), which looks at the content, language, size and placement of the sign. We help you check these points before the sign is made, then prepare and follow up on the application.
Check before you fabricate
A common sequence: the signboard is designed, made and installed together with the renovation, and the licence is handled afterwards. If the design doesn’t match the council’s requirements on wording, language, size or position, the sign may need to be changed, which costs time and money that a quick check could have saved.
What the council usually looks at
- Content — business name and wording on the sign.
- Language — requirements on language use on the sign.
- Size and dimensions — the size of the sign relative to the premises.
- Placement — where and how the sign is mounted on the building.
Specific requirements differ between councils (for example DBKL in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor councils such as MBPJ, MBSJ, MPKj and MPAJ). The council’s current requirements always apply.
What we do
01 Understand your premises and plans
Location, type of sign, design draft if you have one.
02 Map the requirements
Which council, what it is likely to look at, and anything to adjust in the design.
03 Prepare the application
Forms, design drawings and supporting documents.
04 Application support and follow-up
We help you complete the forms and get the application ready to submit. The application is made in the business owner’s name — usually through the owner’s own account on the council’s online system, or at the council counter. Some councils accept an authorised representative with a letter from the owner or director; we’ll tell you what your council requires. Where the council allows it, we can also act as your authorised representative with a signed authorisation letter. After submission, we help you track progress and respond to any requests for additional documents.
05 Follow up on further requirements
Including renewal reminders.
Who this is for
New shops, restaurants and cafés, offices, businesses changing their name or signboard, and businesses moving premises. If you’re also applying for a business licence, it helps to plan the two together.
A note on approval
Approval and timing are decided by the council. We don’t promise approval; we help you avoid preventable issues and keep the application moving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence for my shop signboard?
In most cases, yes. Signboards and outdoor advertisements are generally regulated by the local council. Tell us your location and the type of sign and we’ll help confirm what applies.
What should I check before making the signboard?
The wording, language, size and placement. Checking these against the council’s requirements before fabrication helps avoid changes later.
Is the signboard licence the same as the business licence?
They are related but not the same thing. Depending on the council, the signboard may be applied for separately or together with the premises/business licence. We help you plan both together.
How much is the signboard licence fee?
Fees are set by the council and depend on factors such as the sign’s size and type. We don’t quote council fees here; please refer to the council’s current schedule, and we can explain the factors for your case.
Can you guarantee the council will approve my design?
No. The council decides. We help you check the design against the requirements we know of and adjust it before submission.
